鄙びた漁村や、日本情緒あふれる小さな旅館など、日本のガイドブックだけに頼っていてはなかなか知ることのできない素敵な場所を沢山紹介していて、これまで知らなかった日本を発見できます。それぞれについての解説も大変詳しく、また宿泊施設については低価格な民宿から高級旅館まで幅広く紹介しているので、大変参考になります。日本の文化や歴史の紹介のページは、外国人の目から見た日本の姿を見ることが出来て、読み物としても最適です。観光客に限らず、在日外国人の多くが持っている本なので、彼らが行くクラブやレストランに行ってみたい人にとっても、参考になるでしょう。

昨年の夏、地元の夏祭りにこの「ロンリープラネット」を手に青年がやって来ていました。聞けばイギリスのオックスフォードから、こんな田舎のこんな小さな夏祭りに、わざわざ出掛けて来ている事に驚かされました。ジョン・アシュバン記者がいつ頃来町し取材したのかは判りませんが、記事を読んでいて目からウロコが飛び出る位のショックを受けました。生まれて数十年この夏祭りを見て育った訳ですが、私達の知らないその祭りのいわれや地域の歴史性を事細かく書き上げてあったのです。ともすれば忘れがちな、その地域固有な歴史的資源を外国人が我々以上に興味を持っている事に感動しました。そしてこの時初めて、この本の目的を理解する事が出来ました。そう言えば、ここの所外国人観光客が多くなって来ている事に不思議でたまらなかった訳です。これでようやく理解する事が出来ました。今年も又、多くの「ロンリープラネット」愛読者が来町される事を楽しみにして居ります。

As with all Lonely Planet guides, this one offers some good, solid advice for low-budget travellers. Unfortunately, it focusses too much on low-budget travel so that many of the recommended places to eat are poor by Japanese standards, and readers following suggestions might suffer some bouts of food poisoning during the summertime at some of the eateries. Although most of the major tourist attractions are listed for the major cities, it is just that - a list only. A quick reference (e.g., stars or ranking by numbers 1 to 10) for each attraction would be enormously helpful to help readers sift through possible itineraries, but it is missing. Tokyo is huge, so just imagine the long list of attractions to consider!
This guide does not come close in quality to some of the other outstanding LP guides, e.g., Thailand. I found that the this guide was not enough to help me travel through Japan. Supplemental guides, such as Japan Solo, Fodor's and the Japan National Tourist organization pamphlets (free for non-Japanese) are needed to help the reader decide which sites are worth visiting. (Fodor's and Japan Solo can be used as stand alone guides provided that the traveller is not budget conscious.) The other guides give examples of walking tours, which I found helpful. In short, this LP guide was a bit of a disappointment.
